Thiruparankundram Temple – Madurai
Evening we went to Thiruparan Kundram temple. Pandyas built the temple with rock-cut architecture and one of Lord Muruga’s six abodes. It is believed that Lord Muruga killed the demon Surapadman and married Devasena(daughter of Lord Indra) here. Several marriage ceremonies takes place here due to this reason. Mandapams of the temple are built by Nayakars.
Wall carvings, idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu facing each other, and a huge Nandi statue are some of the unique aspects of this temple. There are approximately 50 steps to reach the sanctum. The steps are a little steep but railings are available. It was a unique experience for us going through the narrow lanes of the cave.
Temple timings 5 am to 1 pm and 4pm to 9pm.
Bought some sovereigns from the shops near the temple and returned to the hotel for dinner.
Don’t forget to buy the famous Madurai malli (jasmine flower).
Madurai is known for: Meenakshi amman temple, Ancient monuments, Madurai malli (jasmine) , Madurai mess, Jigarthanda (a coolant drink)
