Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal – Madurai
Evening we planned to visit Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal around 6 pm. Italian architect built this palace as a residence to King Thirumalai Nayakar. Every evening there is a light and sound show organized. The show is about the story of Silapathikaram (meaning jeweled anklet- an epic poem in Tamil).
The light and sound show English version is at 6.45 pm and the Tamil version at 8 pm.
We got tickets for the English version and went inside the palace. The staff was arranging chairs for the show. Everyone got busy taking pictures next to the gigantic pillars. The show was excellent with surround sound effects. The only hitch I would say were the mosquitoes as it was an open space.
We left the mahal and walked to nearby restaurant Sri Saravana bhavan for dinner and headed back to JC residency.
Madurai is known for: Meenakshi amman temple, Ancient monuments, Madurai malli (jasmine) , Madurai mess, Jigarthanda (a coolant drink)

How to reach:
By flight -takes one and half hours
By train -11 daily trains available from 2.30 am to 11.50pm- Nellai express, Pothigai express, Pandiyan express, Vaigai express etc.- takes 6 to 8 hours depending on the train.
By bus – runs on daily basis – available 0.00 am to 11.55 pm – takes 7 to 9 hours
By car – NH32, NH38 – takes seven hours in normal traffic
